Melissa Mandel, along with several other staff members, is new here at North High School and works in the arts department. Throughout the day she teaches fine arts (drawing, painting), photography, video production and new-tech photography which involve photo manipulation with other technological appliances. Her first thought of this new school was “exciting” and felt the same when meeting new students. Melissa enjoys being a high school teacher and likes the diversity of the kids. What intrigues her the most in photography is “The self” which is how people represent themselves or others.
Cindy Sherman (which there is a poster of her near her desk) is a photographer whom inspires the art teacher in the category, her styles of portraits and conceptualism are what she is best known for, and now has moved onto other aspects.
What influenced her to go into this career? Well, for one thing, lots of family members are teachers, including her grandmother, her mother, and more. And the subject of art was something she enjoyed. Also, in a public school she attended, there was an event that held a class with undergraduates at college that Mandel went to which influenced her even more, but it wasn’t until college that she decided.
