North High to Perform Broadway Classic "Guys and Dolls"!

Do you have plans on October 24th, 25th or 26th? How about November 1st or 2nd? If not, make your way over to North High School for a dazzling performance of the Broadway classic Guys and Dolls! It’s a comedic musical full of crazed lovers, fun dance numbers and songs sure to get you singing along! Directed by Kevin Barnard, this is an event that you will not want to miss. Emily Geving; who acts as a pick pocket/ waitress/ chorus girl; gushes, “The show is a lot of fun!” This will be her 8th show and she is happy to be a part of it. When asked to explain the relationships of the main characters, she said there is one woman who is with a man uninterested in wedding her. The problem is that she wants to marry him. There is a second couple that is caught the other way around. Still, it is not a drama! There are many laughs to be had as Adelaide, Nathan, Sarah and Sky run the crap game and get into mischief. When questioned about the cast, Geving told me that, “The cast we have for it can pull off their parts very well.” In the past, it has not been uncommon for North High to only have one weekend to put on shows. Due to their success in the summer with Beauty and the Beast, there will be two weekends of performances for crowds to rave about, now! Whether you’re a guy or a doll, we are certain you will adore this show.

(Assignment:School Related Article) New Art Teacher by Daniel Marquez (Journalism I)

Melissa Mandel, along with several other staff members, is new here at North High School and works in the arts department.  Throughout the day she teaches fine arts (drawing, painting), photography, video production and new-tech photography which involve photo manipulation with other technological appliances.  Her first thought of this new school was “exciting” and felt the same when meeting new students.  Melissa enjoys being a high school teacher and likes the diversity of the kids.  What intrigues her the most in photography is “The self” which is how people represent themselves or others.
Cindy Sherman (which there is a poster of her near her desk) is a photographer whom inspires the art teacher in the category, her styles of portraits and conceptualism are what she is best known for, and now has moved onto other aspects.
What influenced her to go into this career?  Well, for one thing, lots of family members are teachers, including her grandmother, her mother, and more.  And the subject of art was something she enjoyed.  Also, in a public school she attended, there was an event that held a class with undergraduates at college that Mandel went to which influenced her even more, but it wasn’t until college that she decided.
